Inspired by God, freshman Sarah Choate organizes a Night of Worship (NOW) with the help of classmates.
“I have been to nights of worship before at colleges or in other churches,” Choate said. “I always got something out of it so I figured that it would be good for us students to do something like that.
Choate decided to take action on her thoughts of creating this event.
“It is just something that God is calling me to do,” Choate said. “He wants to use me and I am allowing him to.”
She began to search for committed helpers.
“I asked around school and church of who would be interested in helping,” she said. “Everyone who wanted to help could.”
Several students are included in NOW: Jake Anderson, Sarah Alling, Alex Jennings, Scott Sander, Lauren Provan, Courtney Cantu, Kelsey Guinn, Lindsey Provan, Tim Slimp and Stephen Gutierrez.
“No matter how big or small the amount of dedication these students put in, I still appreciate it,” Choate said.
Students devoted their time to the event despite their busy schedules.
“I was surprised that a lot of people from school got involved,” freshman Sarah Alling said. “God called a lot of people to serve Him.”
The younger generation is taking charge of Night of Worship.
“It is mostly student lead,” Choate said. “I organized everything and us students chose how the night would go. My youth pastor of Community Church, Chris Wann, is going to be playing in the band as well but students are speaking and singing.“
Even with students taking the responsibility of organizing NOW, the group felt that there is only one in charge: God.
“He is the one providing all I need in order to make May 4 possible. I pray a lot of youth show up and that God just pours out all he has on us,” Choate said.
Choate’s grandfather offered his home church to support NOW.
“Night of Worship will be taking place at The Shepherd’s House in Chico,” Alling said.
Everyone is welcome; this event is open to the public.
“We are inviting the whole community and want as many as possible to show up,” Choate said.
By estimating how many flyers went out, a large turn-out is predicted.
“Right now, there are about 90 expected to show up,” Choate said. “I will be happy with whatever the numbers may be. Even if one gathers in his name the heavens are silent for God is listening. He loves when his children cry out.”
Anybody who wants to come, bring $3 for admission. However the money isn’t required. The $3 will be donated to The Shepherd’s House and to help pay for other expenses.
“If someone cannot come because they don’t have $3, I want them there anyway,” Choate said. “If they cannot help pay, it isn’t that big of a deal. I don’t want someone to miss out on an encounter with God because they’re $3 short.“
Night of Worship is set; plans are in motion.
“At the beginning will be snacks and drinks,” Choate said. “Then moving on into the night there will be worship led by Jake Anderson, myself and many others. At the end of the night, about 9:00, a metal rock band will be playing for free.”
The performance isn’t the only thing that is free. Time being donated by helpers is the main concern of Choate. Anyone who doesn’t have the time to fully commit can help in other ways.
“Other students are getting involved by donating food, helping hang up flyers and singing back up in the band,” Choate said.
Everyone is expecting big things.
“I know lives will be changed on the night of May 4,” Alling said.
