Now that November has arrived, 2010 graduate Matthew Britt finds himself hard at work, campaigning and making last minute preparations for upcoming elections.
Matthew Britt, currently recognized as a candidate for State Representative, is a former DHS student. While attending high school, Britt actively participated in SSJ, UIL, and played in a local band. As a student, he helped run a mock election; however he now finds himself a candidate in an election, which by no means is a mock.
Throughout high school, Britt’s interests in politics were evident.
“He was a good student and he did like to discuss politics in class,” said English Teacher, Teresa Powell.
Britt has been interested in running for office since high school.
“I have wanted to be in politics since my sophomore year,” Britt said. “I thought about running for commissioner, but I was more comfortable running for state representative.
Because he is currently 21 years old, he will be the youngest State Representative in the U.S., if elected to office.
“I have mixed emotions,” said Britt. “I like the fact that I am making history. I am also getting experience that will help me if I choose to do this in the future,” said Britt excitedly.
As election day draws near, it is helpful to know what the candidates’ goals are if they are voted into office.
“I want to make terms limited because we don’t have term limits in Texas. I want to give others a chance to have this office. If I win I am going to limit myself to two terms to lead by example,” Britt said confidently as he described his future plan.
Even while running for State Representative, Britt remains focused on a quality education.
“I am going to UNT and majoring in philosophy and religion studies,” Britt said.
Britt keeps an open mind about his future if not elected to office.
“I am going to finish college and go to law school. I might eventually run again,” Britt said.
The fact that he is a DHS graduate, his running for office could reflect the school in a positive way.
“I would like to hope it reflects in a positive manner, because we have graduated a student who cares enough about the future and current issues to go out and try to make a difference,” said Assistant Principal, Sheila McCollum.
Matthew Britt serves as an example of someone pursuing his dreams, no matter how challenging they seem to be.
“For anyone wishing to go for goals, which seem hard to reach, I encourage them to continue because anything is possible,” Britt said.
