The cool crisp air, the smell of fresh cut grass, and dew on the ground; it’s softball season and the girls are ready to play ball.
Last season the softball team had to start from scratch when six seniors and a coach left the team the previous year. In addition, the team had to adjust to two new coaches, Carly Cloud and Tiffany Brown.
“We’ve been through a lot throughout the years but we’ve adapted well and overcome the hardships,” Dawn Jensen, senior said. “I think that makes us better players.”
Starting Friday, January 18, Brown became the new assistant coach.
“Coach Brown is really funny and knows what she is talking about,” Valerie Thompson, junior said.
Practicing every day after school for two hours with conditioning, fielding and hitting drills, the team prepares for the season.
“I think we’re going to do better than last year because all of the conditioning,” Thompson said. “We’re more fit.”
Even though workout is demanding and calls for focus, the athletes enjoys it.
“Practice is hardcore but we can laugh and have fun,” Jordyn Smith, sophomore said.
With two new coaches, new players, practice, and a positive outlook this team can only move forward.
“I expect us to have a better season this year because Coach Cloud is really intense and we never move backwards,” Jensen said.
The softball team’s first scrimmage is on Thursday, Jan. 31 in Paradise. Varsity starts at 5:00 pm and junior varsity at 6:30 pm.
