Flying Through the County
Algebra teacher brings new club to school
January 22, 2015
Align. Throw. Score!! Disc golf, an “in the shadows” sport, is finally making its debut at DHS and becoming more popular in communities and schools. It is just what the name suggests; you play golf with a flying plastic disc, similar to a Frisbee. The object is to throw this disc into a basket while trying to dodge obstacles and get the least amount of throws per basket.
Since the new disc golf course at Melba Doyle Park on 380 was built, Decatur is playing as a community. Now William Gilbert, Algebra 1 teacher, has brought the sport to DHS as an extracurricular activity; a new club for students to try out.
Mr. Gilbert enjoys the sport and wants students to have the experience that he had while playing.
DHS and the Decatur community is reaching out to other schools to persuade them to join in.
- “Right now we are the only school with a full club but VCA (Victory Christian Academy) has a club starting up,” Gilbert said. “The adult club is trying to get Bridgeport to join as well.”
Already, more than fifty students have signed up for the sport. There is no limit. At some meets, there are 500 competing.
Anyone can sign up in Mr. Gilbert’s room (A126). Students can sign up at anytime but must be passing all of his/her classes.
Whoever signs up will receive the club logo to put on their backpack and will also get a custom disc. The custom disc is going to be $20 at the most.
The first practice/meeting is today after school. The upcoming twice monthly meets will be announced at future practices, including places such as Melba Doyle Park on HWY 380, Springtown – 18 holes, Weatherford – 18 holes, Denton – 18 holes, Azle – 18 holes, Lewisville has 2 courses, and Keller also has a course.
