Sounds of booing rang throughout the gym during last weeks 80’s themed pep rally while the freshman cheerleaders performed. This action, which came as a surprise, was completely uncalled for.
Throughout the school year, many sports and other activities work to represent our school in a positive manner. In the same way, cheerleaders work hard to prepare for pep rallies, football games, and other activities. Beginning in May, they began practicing and attended camps throughout the summer. Once school began, they practiced twice a week.
Knowing how hard the freshmen cheerleaders work, it is not respectful to boo them during their performance. All athletes work equally hard to achieve their goals, therefore they deserve the same kind of support and recognition.
As teenagers, we should act more responsibly and treat others the same way we want to be treated. Even while students may boo or say negative comments in a joking manner, it can still be hurtful. We should all ask ourselves if we would want to be treated in that manner.
Students may suggest that it is okay to shout negative responses because it is directed to the freshmen. At one point in our lives, all high school students have been freshmen or are currently in that grade. Freshman students are often teased because they are the “newbies”, however no matter one’s age or grade, students should be considerate of the feelings of everyone. It may also be debated that it’s okay because of freedom of speech. The fact that everyone has freedom of speech and is entitled to his or her own opinion is true. However, other’s feelings should be taken into consideration before voicing negative remarks in a fashion such as booing.
As the next pep rally draws near, students should keep in mind how one’s actions can affect others in a hurtful manner. When standing in the crowds during the pep rally or other spectator events, students should support all grades and those who work to represent our school. This friday we encourage everyone to show more class by supporting all participants of the pep rally. Our school is not merely represented by those who perform in pep rallies, but also by everyone standing in the bleachers.
