And Then There Was One

Final Lowery Sister Takes on the Life of an Only Child

Lowery Sisters

Only children grow up in a household where they form their own personalities, or bounce off of their parents’ or guardian(s)’. Children with siblings grow up either reflecting or rejecting their siblings’ personalities as they grow up.

Some kids today enjoy another kid in the house, while others want all of the attention for themselves. When one’s sibling leaves for college, they either become crushed or their biggest dream just came true.

When my second oldest sister, Maclaine, left for college on August 22, I was left at home as the final Lowery child. Just me, my parents and the dogs. Although my sister holds the title of one of my best friends, being the only kid in the house is like a breath of fresh air.

No one steals my clothes anymore, no body asks me to cover for them, and no one is there to encourage screaming matches. However, I miss jamming out in the car going to Sonic,  late night conversations about what the future has in store for our family, and always having that someone there when I need a shoulder on which to cry.

As I continue my high school career, the next few years won’t be normal for me. Walking into the house knowing that the room across the hall from me, and above me will always be empty brings an ominous feeling.

Only the future knows what the house will feel like with only one kid around now. Only the future knows who I will become outside the shadows of my siblings. Only the future knows the experiences that await me. Let’s pray that it goes well.
